What is the difference between saliva testing and blood testing?
Compared to blood testing, saliva testing tests for the "bio-available" hormones, rather than the "total" hormones. This can be a benefit to the user, by evaluating the "active" hormone levels, as compared to the "total" levels often tested for in a blood test.
Remember, there are three kinds of testosterone in the blood - SHBG bound, albumin bound, and free - consisting of 60-70%, 30-40% and 1-3%, of the testosterone in the blood, respectively. The saliva tests used here, test for the "bio-available" testosterone. The bio-available testosterone is the sum of "free" plus the "albumin bound" testosterone.
Essentially, all non-SHBG bound testosterone is considered the "bio-available" or "active" testosterone. Albumin bound testosterone is considered active due to testosterones relative loose binding to the protein and ease of dissociation. ZRT laboratories uses the standard testosterone reference range of 44-148 pg/ml, however a more progressive "optimal range" for bio-available testosterone would be near 100-200 pg/ml. It's important to remember that this range used in these saliva testing kits is different than the "total testosterone" often measured in blood, of which the typical range is 300-1100 ng/dl.
